Since there was never a Pope John the 20th, would that mean the next Pope after Francis is actually the final Pope Petrus Romanus in the St Malachy prophecy?

r/Catholicism - Since there was never a Pope John the 20th, would that mean the next Pope after Francis is actually the final Pope Petrus Romanus in the St Malachy prophecy?

Three of the Cardinals that are candidates for becoming the next Pope are named Peter.

Petrus Romanus could also be known as Peter II.

I think the lack of a Pope John the 20th threw off the Saint Malachy prediction, which could be why so many religious Scholars call it some kind of a hoax.

Wait so it was detailed after the Popes came to be then very vague for future Popes? Did the St really write it?

[–]gipperscoot 1 point

It was first mentioned in history around 1590 or so. Any “prophecy” of the pope before 1590 is detailed, and pope after 1590 is vague.

What’s an anti-pope

[–]FairchildHood 1 point

It's someone who is not the pope, but setup as an alternative leader to the pope.

So like the ones the Holy Roman Emperor elected. Like Callixtus III.

Wait what’s the prophecy?

[–]Temporary_Low_8639 1 point

Is this something to be worried about?!!

[–]Thanar2Priest 2 points

No.

Are you sure it’s not real, I have scrupulosity

[–]MathAndBake 2 points

It's fake. We do not know the day or the hour. Focus on growing in holiness and serving those around you. Leave everything else to God.

[–]Temporary_Low_8639 1 point

how do you know

[–]MathAndBake 1 point

Scholarly consensus, lack of contemporary sources, lack of predictive power beyond the date of publication. Also, purporting to know the timing of the End Times.

[–]Temporary_Low_8639 1 point

what do you mean purporting.

[–]MathAndBake 1 point

Claiming. Any prophecy that claims to know the timing of the End with any level of detail is automatically suspect.

Okay but aren’t there like signs in the Bible we will see? Mark of the besat? Idk much about this tbh Maybe

Exegesis of the book of Revelation is really tricky. It was never meant to be taken literally. Some is about the persecutions going on at the time, some looks towards the future. All of it is meant to give hope and lead us to be better Christians.

Christians being pressured to leave their faith and being ostracized if they don't has been happening in various times and places since the beginning of the Church. Were any of those the mark of the beast? Idk. Does it matter? Not really.

Like aren’t there signs for the end of times? Like we’ll start to maybe know? Like won’t things start to get rough?

[–]MathAndBake 1 point

Things have been various versions of rough for the entirety of Church history. The whole time since Christ's first coming is the lead up to His second coming. We can't know precisely how long this lead up is. We just rely on God's grace.

What about the Mark of the Beast. Sorry I’m a little scared that the end of times could literally be tomorrow. I’m getting kinda scared. This may be the scrupulous maybe sorry if I’m being annoying

Ok, this is my last answer. Not because I'm annoyed but because I think I'm feeding your scrupulosity. I don't want to do harm. If you're still worried, you need to talk to someone wise IRL like your priest or your spiritual director.

The end of time could be tomorrow. It could be in several thousand years. The end of your time could be tomorrow or in a hundred years. You don't know. God doesn't seem to think it's helpful for us to know. And honestly, I agree. Live a holy life. Seek God. Serve your neighbour. Do what you are called to do. Trust God with everything else. It's easier said than done. But you, as a human, cannot control anything but your own actions. Trying is only going to harm you. God knows and loves each person better than they do themselves. He desires us to be saved. He will do everything for our good. That includes the timing of the end of Time.

Thank you, so He is slow to anger, right? So He may give us time to be saved? I started the faith about a year ago, and am learning, definitely no one near a saint yet so that’s why I got scared maybe.

✝ Matthew 24:36-42

"But concerning that day and hour, no one knows, not even the Angels of the heavens, but only the Father. And just as in the days of Noah, so also will be the advent of the Son of man. For it will be just as it was in the days before the flood: eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, even until that day when Noah entered into the ark. And they did not realize it, until the flood came and took them all away. So also will the advent of the Son of man be. Then two men will be in a field: one will be taken up, and one will be left behind. Two women will be grinding at a millstone: one will be taken up, and one will be left behind. Therefore, be vigilant. For you do not know at what hour your Lord will return."

People have been saying "This Pope is the last Pope" my entire life. I have lived through five Popes and about to live through the 6th.
