The last time I played Eve Online was in 2009, so how is EVE Online different in 2025 from the way it was in 2009?

This is what Google Gemini came up with; how accurate is it?:

EVE Online has evolved significantly since 2009. Here are some key differences you might notice:

  • New Content:

    • Uprising: This major expansion introduced Triglavian incursions, a new enemy faction with unique mechanics and challenging encounters.

    • Abyssal Deadspace: A series of instanced dungeons with unique challenges and rewards.

    • New Ships and Modules: A constant stream of new ships, modules, and weapons has been added, expanding player choices and combat options.

  • Gameplay Changes:

    • Skill Injectors: These allow players to quickly inject large amounts of skill points, speeding up character progression.

    • Rebalancing: Ship and module balance has undergone numerous adjustments over the years, impacting gameplay and meta.

    • Quality of Life Improvements: Many improvements have been made to the user interface, making the game more user-friendly and accessible.

  • Community and Social:

    • The community has evolved: New player experience has been improved, and there are more resources and guides available.

    • Increased focus on player agency: CCP Games has emphasized player-driven stories and emergent gameplay. In essence: EVE Online in 2025 retains its core identity as a sandbox MMO with player-driven politics and epic-scale conflicts. However, it has expanded with new content, mechanics, and a refined player experience. To get a better idea of what to expect:

  • Visit the official EVE Online website: They often have news and updates on the latest developments.

  • Check out recent gameplay videos: YouTube and Twitch have many EVE Online streamers and content creators who can give you a glimpse of the current state of the game. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Inaccurate. Don't trust the output for now, go read the stuff it scraped and aggregated.

This is my guide, it explains all major change in the last 8 years of eve.

Can click the newbie section if it's too overwhelming.

I'd say what you have there is pretty accurate.

The game looks nicer, there are more ships and a lot more avenues for PvE and PvP. But the core is the same and if you were fairly competent and knowledgable of the game in 2009 then it really will not take you long to fill in the gaps.

Honestly probably the single largest content patch in that entire time was Apocrypha, which added the entirety of wormhole space, but that was in March 2009 so you might even be up to speed on that.

I will add something to your stupid AI:

    • Citadels: Worst update for the game in terms of mechanics ever. Pros: easy to manage structures, cons: timers, infinite industry slot and storage, asset safety, structure spam, leads to stagnation and timerization if that is a word, prevents big nullsec wars because nobody wants to shoot 30 Athanors in each system or 10 Keepstars. Also their fuel cost is way too low compared to the old POS mechanic that was immune to all these drawbacks but only had a drawback of being to hard to deal with for gen-alpha skibidi ohio capsuleers and required trust in people, a mechanic that was nice for driving conflict in eve.
    • CCP Games CRUSHES player-driven stories and emergent gameplay. In essence: EVE Online in 2025 retains its core identity as a sandbox MMO with player-driven politics and epic-scale conflicts. However, it's getting worse and worse every year if you trust the bittervets on reddit :D
