(USA) How does working at McDonald's in 2025 differ from how working there was in 2005, when I left my last one?

Is McDonald's easier, less stressful and more Humane to work at in 2025 than it was in 2005, at age 20?

Would I have a better time working there nowadays at age 40? Or am I better off continuing to deliver on Doordash?

In 2005, I ended up hating working there so much that I thought everyone deserved better than to work at McDonald's, and that robots should take over their jobs. So I tried to major in "Automation Engineering" in college so I could someday develop robots that could perform fast food duties better than people. But regrettably, I never finished that major due to financial constraints. That's why I'm now only a Dasher rather than an engineer of automated processes.

But if I were to ever give McDonald's a second chance in or after 2025, would I develop a better attitude towards the company now than I did back in 2005? Or will it renew my passion to someday develop robots to replace all miserable fast food workers?

20 years of inflation lots of toys and limited time items the McRib being a light switch every year...

Honestly there are way too many factors that would go into it to give you a straight answer. There was only a 5 year gap between my McDonald’s stints which I know isn’t as much as yours, but aside from some menu items and production/service processes the job is more or less the same. Really the same can be said for every fast food job I’ve worked, and I can’t imagine your experience would differ all too much from mine.

There’s also the location you work at, who your managers are, which managers/coworkers are working a given shift, your own personality and outlook on the job, and plenty of others that I’m not immediately thinking of.

Ubereats, skipthedishes (canada), doordash add a lot of stress too these days.

Short staffing is very much common. You are still doing 90% of the tasks as you would in 2005, the remaining 10% is delivery order taking. i dont know if you guys wrote orders down from the phone call and then deliver it(?) or did mcdonalds even have any delivery back in 2005? If not, then you are doing 100% of the tasks same as in 2005.

More RGR visits, safety visits, health inspection visits, just to find mistakes and cut restaurants percentage. It was suppose to be a learning lesson for restaurants but stores these days are seeing it as a a compettion between each other. And then they share on workplace how much they scored. It will drive you crazy having to clean all the things management would give you.

OEPE, competition between stores as all the machines are recording how long your customer had to wait. The longer the time = less happy your GM is. Another stress.

Tiktok trends where they are fooling around McDonalds workers influence this era teens to do the same. Less humane.

Table SERVICE, mcdonalds is aiming towards 100% table service (our GM told) so you bring food to the table to the customer,

You are better off earning through doordash. I’d suggest getting a security license of your state worth the pay (if money is goal for now)

They already tried replacing robots, but it just didnt have much experience. Wrong orders through Drive thru, wrong placement. However, mcdonalds is going towards table service and our table tents have chip inside which track what order number is sitting at what table (table tents are numbers which customers put on their table if they want a table service). So robot service would only be that.

It will definitely give you thoughts to quit. Specially idk your gender but if you are a male, you will mostly be doing heavy lifting by management like cleaning top of some equipment.

Automation in mcdonalds will be expensive at beginning, with regular maintenance and equal risk of teens who would play and try to break that thing so I dont think many owners would buy into that.

Your frustration that all the work should be robotic would be at uncomparable level these days. There are more duties compared to 2005 these days.

Workers are easy to control, cheap, no maintenance, so why replace them?
