What is the world record for the highest total medical debt owed by an individual?

What is the world record for the highest total medical debt owed by an individual?

It might be eight figures, isn't it? How do they rack up debt that high?

And how do they expect to take care of that debt?

aside from being stabilized in the ER

That's what the ER is for. It isnt for long term care.

Do you even know what EMTALA is for? Why would chemo and transplants be part of that?

We've had international patients who were uninsured and had enormous bills. A member of some crazy wealthy family in Saudi Arabia brought their daughter here who was on bedrest for 6 months because of pregnancy complications. They ended up with a bill over 1M. And they prepaid 500K I think. I'm sure there have been higher bills, though.

i have seen somewhere deep in 6 digits, like 600k-700k. i work with health insurance, so it wasnt mine, but if i recall right, it was an elective service at an out of network provider, or something like that. i dont remember what exactly, but i recall looking into it, and realizing i wasnt going to be able to do anything for the cost because of the network status.

When was that? Aren't plans required to carry OOP max even for out of network for the last decade or so since ACA? I'm sure there are exceptions but just curious if that was recent at all.

Not for out-of-network. But even if it's capped, you would still have any amounts over what is allowed. There is truly no such thing as an out-of-network out of pocket maximum

within the last 6 months. there is an oop max, but oop max only applies to reasonable and customary. an out of network provider can bill for the difference that is beyond that

Wow I didn't realize. Thanks for this.
