A picture of the front would have been better. That's the unusual end.

The front is also particularly cool on this car because of the asymmetrical hood and the lack of a grill above the bumper. It was designed by Raymond Loewy who was a famous graphic/industrial designer of the time. He did a redesign the Greyhound logo and renamed Esso to Exxon because he thought the Xs were cool.

Neat history lesson!

[–]caucafinousvehicle 2 points

He was right, too!

He also designed earlier Studebakers, the Lucky Strike package, the Air Force One livery, and the US Coast Guard “racing stripe” among numerous other things. So many cool designs.

Both ends qualify for weird, methinks. This really does have Studebaker genes showing.

It's a Studebaker Avanti II

Yeah my first thought was how is this weird wheels my town had an Avanti dealer when I was in high school in the 2000s.

> mated to a whole bunch of different platforms

They used versions of the original Studebaker frame outfitted with different engines and transmissions and various parts like brakes and bearings and such.

[–]mwoehrle3 3 points

Not exactly true. They used the Studebaker design chassis up till ‘85. After that there were versions using some Corvette components. Around 86 they began using G body chassis (Monte Carlo). Then later, like late 90’s early 00’s, they started using Mustang chassis.

I had actually forgotten about those bastardized reskinned Mustangs. The company that made the Avanti after Studebaker's dissolution ceased to exist after 1982, the later cars were attempts at reviving the marque that all quickly ended in bankruptcies or sales of the business after producing few units each time.

Yes! Same chassis, different drive trains, not different platforms altogether. Thanks!

They stuck with GM parts for most of their run.

Aaaand then there is the Avanti II

[–]Gostaverling 1 point

IIRC first production car to his 1hp per cubic inch.

[–]Viharabiliben 3 points

If you forgot your glasses they can look like an Aston Martin.

[–]student5320 3 points

Yep, I'm in South Bend where Studebaker pumped these put and I see a few from time to time. Did you know at one time (very briefly) they were the fastest production car?

[–]64557175 8 points

I always thought of it as a butterface of a car, but eventually learned to love the goofy front end.

[–]Roofofcar 2 points

I think that nose is endearing. It feels like a manatee to me.

[–]ScottaHemi 2 points

not in person but plenty in pictures!

really cool car.

[–]RetreadRoadRocket 2 points

Yep. Thought about buying one once (s Studebaker one), because they're neat cars but it just wasn't doable at the time.

I knew a guy with one. Cool cars

[–]Rynyann 1 point

I very nearly ended up with one of the 80s Avantis as my first car in high school

[–]ThePenisMightier79 1 point

Once or twice

[–]delicate10drills 1 point

One in my town with a nasty, throaty sounding v8

[–]Quiet_Cable8747 1 point

Yep. Pretty neat lil cars.

[–]Wuddntme 1 point

My father had two of them. All of my uncles had them. I still have various parts from/for them in my garage.

I test drove one in the early 90’s. A turbo-charged v8. But the next day I found out my wife was pregnant so it was not to be. I still hope to have one some day.

[–]Physical_Pumpkin_913 1 point

Yes early 70’s

[–]neverinamillionyr 1 point

I’ve ridden in one. A family friend had one and I got a ride in it as a kid.

[–]Addicted-2Diving 1 point

Very neat

[–]therealjimbus 1 point

I own 2

[–]mini4x 1 point

Like a million times. My uncle was a big Studebaker guy he had a few of these and a few other Studes.
