Reply to u/MonsieurKaizer from my now-locked r/Surgery thread. I must continue the convo here since I can't reply to anyone there anymore.
To u/MonsieurKaizer - you made this comment before mods locked and deleted that thread:
You can take a sip of water up to 2 hours before surgery.
But aside from that, if there's water in your stomach when you are put under, you run the risk of that water running back up and into your lungs. That's a bad time.
So your surgery will be put off if you can't go without a drink for 2 hours. If it's emergency surgery, they intubate and sedate under as much precaution as you can.
So my reply is:
Is it possible to get anaesthetized unconscious without also needing a tube down my throat? If so, can I get a sip immediately before, then get anaesthetized out to a nap 2 hours early before the surgery so that I won't have to worry about thirst attacks and anxiety in those 2 hours before surgery?
Then they intubate me after those 2 hours of being knocked out and then start the surgery?
