I want to say it’s an aid but they’re not, ya know, aiding lol. And more-so than distracted driving, this is blatant disregard of the most fundamental safety procedures for drop offs. Keep your eyes on the students as they exit the bus and proceed all the way to their designated points of safety before proceeding with operating your bus.

I generally wait until the student is far enough from my bus that they cannot roundhouse kick the bumper (or crossing arm) before putting the transmission back in D. If it's a student I've never met before, I sometimes will make the mistake of retracting the stop arm while they're still crossing the street (because I didn't know which side they live on).

We have parents who are not home and children let themselves in; we also have apartment students where there would be no way to watch them enter their apartment and sometimes even their building.
