r/Scams - [US] I haven't ordered a package in a while. They're clearly playing me for a fool. This reeked too much of scam.

This email is trying to tell me that a package had been ordered with my credentials for $389, but it doesn't look professional and they use "kindly," which I'm sure no legit company uses in their email. Why do scammers use "kindly" in the first place?

They also illegitimately use Norton's name. I didn't try their number. I wonder what would've happened had I dialed it?

Now here's what the email said for those who can't read screenshots:

hello (address redacted)@GMAIL.COM,

We are getting your package ready for email distribution. The transaction you initiated has been successfully completed. The reflected amount will appear on your statement within 48 hours.

Do not try to evade the no phone number rule. You will be banned if you do that again.

Your submission was manually removed by a moderator for the following reason:

This applies even if it's a scammer or a scam callcenter. Please post again, but this time removing, censoring or otherwise redacting any personal/contact information. When you do, don't post a screenshot. Transcribe the important parts of the conversation. And put the website address in the title of your new post if you are reporting a scam website.

Yeah it’s a !refund scam. The whole scam is to get you to call that phone number. Read the reply to this comment.

Hi /u/erishun, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Refund scam.

Refund scams usually start with a spam email about a fake transaction, although they can also be sent through SMS or any other messaging service. The message will provide you with a phone number to call if you want to cancel the transaction, and if you call the scammers will try to get you to provide credit card or banking information in order to receive your refund. Scammers have been taking advantage of Paypal's invoice system to send out realistic scam emails through Paypal itself, here is a news article about that technique: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2022/08/paypal-phishing-scam-uses-invoices-sent-via-paypal/. Here is a Snopes article regarding the Norton variant of this scam: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/norton-email-renewal-scam/

If you know someone that fell for a refund scam, sit down together to watch this video by Jim Browning and try to retrace their steps: https://youtu.be/X4PllvUowaQ

/u/TheresJustNoMoney - This message is posted to all new submissions to r/scams; please do not message the moderators about it.

New users beware:

Because you posted here, you will start getting private messages from scammers saying they know a professional hacker or a recovery expert lawyer that can help you get your money back, for a small fee. We call these RECOVERY SCAMMERS, so NEVER take advice in private: advice should always come in the form of comments in this post, in the open, where the community can keep an eye out for you. If you take advice in private, you're on your own.

A reminder of the rules in r/scams: no contact information (including last names, phone numbers, etc). Be civil to one another (no name calling or insults). Personal army requests or "scam the scammer"/scambaiting posts are not permitted. No uncensored gore or personal photographs are allowed without blurring. A full list of rules is available on the sidebar of the subreddit, or clicking here.

You can help us by reporting recovery scammers or rule-breaking content by using the "report" button. We review 100% of the reports. Also, consider warning community members of recovery scammers if you see them in the comments.

It’s really clear from the sender’s email that it’s a scam. Trust your instincts

Just got this within minutes of each other from scammers claiming  to be PayPal. Checked my actual account and all is well. Mulling over calling the number in the email to fuck with them. On a side note, I see canceling my PayPaI account is nearly impossible.

Good point. I'll just think evil on them and their bloodline.
