Re: Basketball - what is the difference between Basquetbol and Baloncesto?

I think of how Baloney and Baloncesto begins with the same 5 letters, so is a Baloncesto a baloney-colored basketball, while basquetbol is standard orange?

If not, what's the difference, and when is one or the other used?

“Balón” literally just means ball. It’s also used in “balonmano” (handball). “Cesto” means basket

I’m guessing basquetbol is literally just a cognate for basketball

As for usage, I’m guessing it depends on where you live. But they refer to the same sport

They are the same.

Grammaticaly, Baloncesto is the corrrect form and Basquetbol is an absorbed term from the English Basketball.

Same as fútbol (football) and balompié. In spanish, everyone knows it as fútbol although balompié is the correct form.

TIL that in Spanish you can’t have an “n” before a “p” and that’s why “balón” is changed to “balom” in “balompié”
